Partial Application: Medietas
I'm only including some of the information here. I want to avoid as many spoilers as possible, so his personal history section is getting cut out. I hope you understand. If you do want to know more about him, stuff will be revealed both in game and in my upcoming novel, Fugitive Rising.
Personal information about the author can be found on my other character journal, half_hero.
Appearance: A tall man (he’s 6’3”) with stunningly bright yellow eyes that have slit pupils and yellow nictitating membranes that he lowers in bright sunlight. Anyone who meets him would immediately notice that he’s not human as his skin is roughly the same hue as a fire truck with thick, notched ridges across its surface in key locations. He also has teeth sharper than a human being’s.
His nose is long and prominent, slightly down turned, and he has full lips. His face does show appropriate signs of age, but he is overall a handsome older man. He is bald, though not naturally, and has greying black eyebrows. His most noticeable feature is the fading pink scar through his right eye roughly shaped like lightning. Virsune has real silver facial jewelry. Both nostrils are pierced, as well as his ears, and he has a piercing across the bridge of his nose. The bridge and ear piercings are set with jade stones.
Virsune is physically fit for his age, but not overtly muscular. He has broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and steady hands with long fingers. While a human’s skin looks smooth in texture, it is obvious to people who get close to Virsune physically that his skin is actually rough in textured. He also has a cleft chin.
The clothing he wears is often rich in appearance, and heavily patterned as well as brightly colored. He often wears loose pants as well as slippers with soles sewn into them, though he prefers to wear practical clothing when going outside to work. Virsune prefers to be well covered, and often wears multiple layers. He likes jewelry and usually wears coats.
Setting: Virsune is from a Political Space Drama that spans many planets. I’m actually not really certain how to best explain the setting to you because it’s so very, very large. I’ve done a lot of worldbuilding and tried to flesh out the Galaxy itself as best as I could, so it would be kind of like trying to explain Star Wars Lore concisely in a way that makes sense to someone who knows nothing about Star Wars.
I’ll name a few major things that are important for you to know so you can understand why Virsune/Satchi is the way he is.
First of all, Virsune’s world does have a form of magic. It’s called the Spark, and unlike the Force it’s generated internally. It’s not an energy field, it’s just something that you either have or you don’t have. It does exist within the Galaxy itself in varying quantities and is something like the power of probability. It resides in the Galaxy’s core. It can influence the fate of the Galaxy itself as its quantities in the Galaxy can influence whether the Galaxy itself begins to unravel at the seams. If the Spark of the Galaxy grows too great or too little reality will begin to rewrite itself, a result that can be achieved by beings called Sprites pushing the Galaxy either toward Order or Chaos.
It’s a bit like Faerie magic in the sense that you can have the potential to use the Spark, but if you don’t believe you can, or if you don’t have the will to alter reality, you will not be able to tap into your own innate abilities. It can do almost anything the user can imagine it can do as long as the user can concentrate long enough to do it. In fact, it is almost easier to define what the Spark cannot do, as it is limited only in four major ways; it cannot predict the future, it cannot revive the dead, it cannot generate or disassemble/reassemble matter, and it cannot make people fly who are unable to fly (even if it can levitate them short distances).
The Spark is limited by the imagination and power level of its user. There are people with varying levels of spark, generally related to will or belief. If one has especially strong will or believes in themselves more than an average person, they will be stronger than someone with fewer of these resources. Additionally, the Spark is something you have to train to be able to use, so someone with more training will obviously understand the nuances of how to use the Spark better than someone without the training.
The most important groups to the story that have impacted Virsune the most are the Union of Ryll and the Zyloni Empire.
The first group is the group he was born to. The Union of Ryll has existed for roughly 1000 years at the start of his story and was founded by his species, typically characterized as war-like by the rest of the Galaxy, the Pureblood Ryll. They were founded by a man named Sorrus Harlle, called The Magus by his people, who conquered a swath of planets in his part of the Galaxy after having his people’s technology advanced by the Vel’Ri. Before they were discovered, they were a society that had barely began to establish settlements, and came from a desert world with few resources. Naturally, they conquered the Galaxy as violence had been the only way to gather resources for all of their history.
They absorbed cultural aspects of the people they conquered and declared them all Ryll, and practiced a religion that claims that good and bad actions contribute to the cosmic balance. To this day their leader is still called the Magus, and leads a council of twelve families called the Patriarchal Council, serving as a tie-breaker in their votes. All Ryll leaders have the Spark, as Sorrus considered the Spark a sign that the divine forces had selected someone to be a Guardian of their people. They believe family as a choice, and do not frown upon the adoption of other people into a family unit, and as such, Ryll are very focused on cultural ties rather than ties of blood.
This is in part influenced by the fact that Pureblood Ryll have such low rates of reproduction that, even after living in an advanced society for one thousand years, their population has either decreased or stayed the same. Very rarely in the history of the Galaxy has it increased in any way. They have never been able to be picky about who they accept as their heirs, so this mindset is reflected in their societal practices.
The other major group is the Empire, who was founded only a few hundred years after the Union and who was founded in opposition to the Union’s habit of conquering worlds. Instead, it invited world’s to join its ranks for protection while offering to keep its cultures intact. The system itself actually functions more like a parliamentary representative republic than an Empire, and the Empress herself (as the Zyla are a matriarchal and matrilineal society) is a figurehead and serves as a chief diplomat to other sectors. There is a strong emphasis on both individuality and personal freedom in Imperial society.
Most importantly, the Order of the Garnet Star, an organization of Spark Bearers who believes in using their powers solely to serve the rest of the Galaxy, developed around the same time. The Order of the Garnet Star is important because, though generally seen as an Imperial Organization, it is an alternative point of view to the Ryll view of the Spark, and is prominent as a relief organization in most parts of the Galaxy. Often, they will serve to broker peace or solve murders and mysteries on an intergalactic level when the stakes are high because they are thought to be impartial mediators, though they are also trained as soldiers. They are more like an Order of Knights than they are the Jedi, because there is no religious aspect to their behavior and their members are provided a small stipend on which to live, are encouraged to marry and have children, and often have lives outside the Conclave where those not deployed live communally. The only requirement for membership is to swear oneself to a Code of Conduct and to do missions on the Order’s behalf.
Personality: At his core, Virsune is a good person.
This is his most defining trait, because the entire point of his story is not to become a better person, but to become a more healthy, well-balanced one. As such, a lot of his flaws and conflict points aren’t really things that might appear to be bad from the outside. He’s genuinely well liked by most people (though certainly not everyone), and in spite of his rough past, tries to continually improve and become a better person. He’s incredibly focused on self analysis.
Compassion, empathy, intelligence, and a strong will are at the core of his being. First and foremost, Virsune has dedicated his life to helping people. Though in his youth he was a bit more self-centered and oblivious (I think most people are, before they come to understand that there’s a world outside of their understanding), he has always had a strong desire to help other people, and has never been able to leave well enough alone when he could see someone suffering.
Combined with an incredible sense of patience, an analytical and open mind, and a penchant for abstract thinking, Virsune has a good grasp of the political as well as human aspects of how to function in a society on a wide scale. He cares about people, and he cares about using the privilege and power given to him, especially after seeing the impact of the brutality of war, in a way that benefits the people he has a responsibility toward.
In spite of being a very gentle person, Virsune is also neurotic, self-loathing, and has problems accepting help from other people or even opening up to others. He throws all his energy into helping other people, and though many people like him, few people truly know him as he feels guilty for talking about himself and asking for help. Because he has so much power and influence, and because he is often relied on for help and support, and most importantly, because he has always been seen as somewhat different from others for one reason or another, Virsune does not feel like he can depend on others and often feels guilty for bringing up his problems. His issues are compounded by the fact that he sees praise as a reward instead of just simply an act of gratitude, and because he does not feel he deserves to be rewarded for simply doing something he should do (being a good person), he is often bad at accepting compliments.
He is also autistic, which has informed a large part of his personality. Though a hyperlexic individual who is highly verbal and excellent at communication, especially through the written word, and with good instincts about people in terms of whether they are good or bad, he often second guesses his first impressions of others and can be awkward in personal interactions. A man with strong convictions, Virsune is someone who hates conflict and does not deal well with criticism, as he often sees his work inexorably tied to who he is as a person, but in spite of his insecurities and sensitivity, he is not afraid to rock the boat if he feels it is the morally correct thing to do. He would rather put himself in danger, rather suffer from depression and anxiety, that let his friends suffer the same. It is only because he is so resilient that he is able to withstand throwing himself in the line of fire, no matter how much he suffers for it. Virsune is not the sort to ever regret standing up for others, even if he is hurt in the process.
Sometimes Virsune will have problems with facial recognition or hearing the words others say if he is not directly looking at them. Growing up, he was often called stupid and lazy for these and similar traits, so he thinks very little of himself. However, his experiences have also shaped him into the sort of person who would never begrudge others for their weaknesses. Unlike the people in his life who constantly told him who and what he should be, and judged him for his failures, he is determined to be a better person and not judge others for their shortcomings. For this reason, in spite of holding himself to a nearly impossible standard, he is nonjudgmental and forgiving toward others, and never expects them to do more than they are capable of. At the same time, he is extremely self critical, and if he senses even the slightest weakness in himself, he will self-flagellate. Though technically recognizing that people like his mother and Merona would have hurt him no matter what he did, he secretly feels that there must be some character flaw inherent to him that made him deserve it, and that he is at fault for the way they hurt him because he didn’t have the strength to say “no” at the time.
Actually, it is because he is so kind and forgiving that he often invites people into his life that he shouldn’t. He lets people take advantage of him because he continually forgives them and is very bad at setting up his own boundaries. Virsune is a very good person, but he is also a very easy person for predatory people to take advantage of because his specific traits make him likely to acquiesce to their wishes. He is aware of this trait, but feels that if he were to be less forgiving, he would cease to be himself entirely. Virsune is desperately searching for balance, a way to be forgiving but to still set healthy boundaries, though it is a struggle for him to do so.
More than anything, after all, Virsune fears that he is the one thing that he is absolutely not -- A horrible person.
Deeply traumatized, he suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which is comorbid with his depression, and has various triggers, most notably anything insinuating that male victims of sexual assault were weak or wanted what happened to them, or anyone offering him alcohol. Virsune feels very deeply and passionately about everything, and worries that because people have told him he is tactless and graceless in the past, that means he is a bad person. He speaks very formally, after all, and when he believes something, he is very certain it is correct. Many people do not like this about him and do think he comes off as pretentious, which is compounded by his tendency to complain about anything unfamiliar to him as a coping method. He is a creature of routine, after all.
It is important to remember, though, that underneath the kindness and soft-spoken compassion and empathy, there is a fiercely passionate man. Virsune has a heart of steel and fire, and nothing can dominate him for long. He has survived a great deal, and manages to be a kind person in spite of it all specifically because he has always believed in self improvement. If he is told he has done something wrong and truly self-examines to see that the person in question is correct, he will change that thing about himself, and if Virsune wants to do something, he is talented and determined enough that very little could stand in his way except his own defeatism.
Powers/Abilities/Talents: Virsune is capable of the following --
*A powerful Spark Bearer who can do thing like control minds, track people across long distances, and rarer abilities such as dreams that stand out in his subconsciousness, pointing him to a potential correct future. If he can imagine the ability to do it, he can probably do it, as long as it doesn’t violate the previously stated rules in the “Setting” section of this application. As with my last character, I wouldn’t do these things if they specifically overpowered another character without their author’s permission. Small things, though, like influencing the probability of finding a lost set of keys in a certain place, are fair game. Because of his personality, it is unlikely he’d do anything especially brutal with his powers anyway.
*Because he is technically a Sprite, he does not age and heals quickly from wounds of all sorts and varieties. His level of cellular regeneration is remarkable. However, he is not aware of this particular trait, and is unlikely to discover it unless he is mortally wounded, so it would not have terrible effect on the game.
*Virsune is autistic, and as such is incredibly sensitive to sounds, scents, and levels of light. Though this can also be disabling and frequently causes sensory overload, there are situations in which it’s very useful. For example, he can often hear sounds that other people can’t, like the sounds of someone dropping something important in a crowded space. I would list this under his abilities because it is something unique to him (and other autistic characters).
*A highly intelligent person with knowledge related to history, sociology, archeology, and politics. He is incredibly good at giving speeches, and is an incredibly well put together person. In general, he is good with words, especially written ones. Virsune also possesses a strategic mind.
*He is trained in different manners of combat, including firearms and hand to hand, but prefers to use melee weapons as he can heat certain kinds of metal using the Spark and use those abilities in concert with his combat abilities to great effect. However, he is a pacifist, and it is unlikely he would attack someone other than in self-defense or defense of an innocent.
*I would consider being good with children one of his abilities, actually.
What 4 items would you like your character to have with them on the island during their stay?
*The ceremonial sword that doubles as a functional weapon he earned after he saved the life of the Emperor-Consort Ouvora the first time. It’s not the sort of thing that he typically carries, because he’s a diplomat and not a fighter, but he’d want it if he really needed it, so it would be there. It’s a backsword, a type of saber that can be used for a fencing like fighting style, but is very ornate. It is made from a special metal that can withstand being superheated and supercooled, making it an ideal weapon for a Spark Bearer.
*Images of his children. Maybe stored on some kind of device from his world, like a datapad, which has a black background touch screen but can display colored images. I’m not going to maroon him somewhere and not even let him look at them. I put him through enough in his canon the way it is.
*A recording from his best friend, Xeulo, received at the end of my first novel. He wants to see the face of his friend, who is closer to him than any brother, as motivation to find a way home. Xeulo would not let him give up on getting home or going back to everyone else when he ran away before and hurt the people who mattered most to him by allowing them to think he was dead.
*Something to stim with. Maybe a necklace made out of a material he can chew on. One of his major stims is, in fact, chewing. If he wanted to write he’d just get materials to do so himself, and I think stimming would be important for him in such an anxiety ridden situation.
